Foreskin Problems

Foreskin problems are usually caused by irritation or mild infections that can easily be treated. It's important to see a doctor if your child is experiencing any symptoms in this area as they can be very uncomfortable.

Foreskin Health

The foreskin is the protective fold of skin that covers the end of the penis. Some parents choose to have their children circumcised to remove the foreskin. The foreskin needs to be kept clean in order to prevent problems such as irritation and infection. The foreskin is attached to the head of the penis during infancy, but it usually begins to become looser between the ages of about two and six If this doesn't happen naturally by the age of about nine or your child is experiencing pain or other symptoms, then a simple procedure can be performed to correct the problem. The foreskin should never be pushed back until it has retracted naturally.

Signs of Foreskin Problems

Common signs of problems affecting the foreskin in children are:

  • redness
  • swelling
  • itchiness
  • irritation
  • soreness

Causes of Foreskin Problems in Children

The most common cause of foreskin problems in children is irritation, which can be caused by moisture, heat, or tight clothing. In infants, the foreskin can become red and swollen due to nappy rash. Sometimes the problem is caused by an infection, such as thrush or balanitis.

Although it is less common, some children can have problems due to the foreskin being too tight or failing to retract naturally as they grow older. When the opening of the foreskin is too small to allow it to retract, it is known as phimosis.

Treatments for Foreskin Problems

If the problem is caused by irritation or an infection, then the best way to treat it and prevent future problems is to ensure the foreskin is being cared for properly. Your doctor may also recommend antibiotics or a steroid cream if the symptoms are caused by an infection.

The foreskin should be washed with warm water every day and then dried carefully. If the foreskin has retracted, then it is important to clean underneath it too. Don't use any harsh or scented products on this delicate area, but an unscented moisturiser can be used to prevent dry skin if necessary. The foreskin should always be returned back to its position covering the head of the penis after it has been retracted. You should ensure that your child knows how to care for his foreskin as he gets older.

In some cases, this may not be enough to prevent problems. If the foreskin is frequently becoming infected or irritated, then circumcision may be an option. Surgery to enable to foreskin to retract may also be recommended if this doesn't occur naturally.

If you have noticed any signs of foreskin problems affecting your child then you should make an appointment to get expert advice. A paediatric urologist can identify the cause and suggest treatments to help. Although problems with the foreskin are often easy to treat, they can cause a lot of discomfort for your child, so it's important to seek treatment quickly.
